As a friend of mine, a nurse, explained it. The caffeine in coffee is a stimulant. It stimulates the bowels. Same thing with nicotine. So despite being a stimulant it also relaxes the colon. Therefore, it you're ever constipated, drink coffee or have a cigarette. And it's also the heat of the coffee. Heat works better for the stimulation than cold beverages with caffeine.
