gringo
"This is truly only derogatory in regions of northern Mexico and in the United States where it translates to "white foreigner." Gringo in many other countries in Latin America really only translates as "foreigner" without a pejorative connotation. Is generally used to refer to all foreigners/tourists of apparently northern European descent. Some say it comes from Spanish "griego" (meaning Greek) which used to be used to refer to anything foreign. Others say it comes from hearing Americans sing the popular song "Green Grow the Rushes" (unlikely though). Yet others believe it comes from when soldiers were in South America and they all wore green outfits, and they would say, "Green Go." Gringa for females."

.Gay is a well known odd ball in southern AZ. Hes a legend in his own mind. Hes too old and weird to be much of a problem any more. I personally don't find gringo offensive, I am not too concerned what anyone calls me. I am who I am and "labels" were never very important . Calling any one a "name" to me simply denotes lack of vocabulary skills. I use the term illegal aliens because that is what people without the legal right to be in the USA are. That are illegal aliens

They believe it is ok to use the racist slur "gringo" because they actually are racist and many people who use the word "gringo" are well aware that it's racist. White people have been called "gringo" for so long they don't even realize it's racist or never even bothered to look into the history of the word "gringo". The word "gringo" can be used like the "N" word is. It can be used light-heartedly or as a real racist term. This doesn't mean we should start naming a bunch of establishments and products "N gg r".

they suspect it is okay to apply the racist slur "gringo" because of the fact they are easily racist and assorted people who use the be conscious "gringo" are properly conscious that it is racist. White human beings have been called "gringo" for see you later they do no longer even are attentive to it is racist or by no ability even afflicted to look into the history of the be conscious "gringo". The be conscious "gringo" would be utilized like the "N" be conscious is. it is utilized easy-heartedly or as a real racist term. this does not mean we would desire to continually initiate naming a team of institutions and products "N gg r".

The term "gringo" is not a racial slur. When I was at Coronado close to N.A.S. North Island I went to a Mexican restaurant and in the menu there was a section that said "For the Gringo" meaning American food. It is not a derogatory racial slur.

Because the PC-Nazis at Q&A only care if you use (or even only refer to) "en-eye-gee-gee-ee-ar". Why your account won't get deleted for saying "gringo" can only be explained by realizing that the PC-Nazis at Q&A don't understand that racism is the same no matter what the color of your skin is.
"is the term gringo insulting? i really want to know, i have met alot of white guys, that have referred to themselves as gringos."
...just like many blacks call each other n****r, so shouldn't that word also not be insulting? What ever happened to reason and even-handedness?

It depends how it is used. For example since I was born here, naturally I speak English more fluently than I do Spanish.Every time I go back to Panama,my family calls me a "gringa." I think it's funny. The origin of "gringo" is really "green-go" when the Mexicans were trying to tell the American soldiers who happened to be dressed in green uniforms to go away.

Racial and other slurs lose potency over time...witness my local Mexican friends who refer to themselves jokingly as "wetbacks." A few years ago that word would have been equated to the N word.
Gringo refers to our dollar bill which is green....and in the 19th century, it implied a desire that "Americans GO home." i.e. green-go.....gringo....
