Absolutely! We all have to die someday, it's a natural process. It has nothing to do with deities. Not necessarily something to look forward to but there's not much we can do about it. Seriously, so many millions...billions of living things have died before us, chances are it's either nothing or not a big deal.

Although I've never been diagnosed with a fatal illness, a few years ago, I was in a bad car accident. No one wanted to tell me just how badly I was injured and when I asked if I was going to die, there was a long pause before one of the paramedics finally answered "I don't know." Usually, they try to be optimistic and tell you that you'll be fine even if you won't be because they don't want you to start panicking. An "I don't know" is about as good as a "yes, you'll probably die." So on the ambulance ride, I pondered my impending death and had a good hour to think about it from the time of the crash until the time I got to the hospital and was stabilised.
I don't think at any point it even crossed my mind that there might be a God and what might happen to me if I died and there was one. Having been raised in a strict Catholic family and having had the fear of God instilled in me from a young age, I was kind of surprised to look back at those events and realise that I hadn't considered the possibility of God at all. I always thought I would second guess myself in a situation like that.
So I guess I can answer yes, I am secure in my atheism.

I'm 24 and lately I have been pondering my mortality quite a bit. I've had several people very close to me die recently and it makes me think about the time I have left. And no, I do not think I would start believing in god if I was diagnosed with a fatal illness- I would try to do all the things I wanted to do here on earth because I don't think we get another chance after death. I believe that thinking about my mortality just makes me a firmer believer in what I do believe

I'm an atheist. I'm under 30 yes. Hopefully, I'll still be alive at 30 because I wouldn't have acheived my goals. Even if I were diagnosed with a fatal disease I would still be an atheist. It would just be more proof that God doesn't exist.

WRONG!!! Im 35 for starters. And very secure in my lack of beleifs.
If I had a fatal disease, I suppose I would see a medical professional, and would try to remain in good spirits. If I healed/recovered, I would then thank the real persons responsible - the medical professionals rather than some mythical sky captain.
You might also want to know that every single one of us suffers from a terminal disease - its called LIFE. Its ends, for everyone, in DEATH. Your God wont change that.

A fatal disease would not make me believe in God. It's not something that I can be scared into. And I'm not really afraid of death. After much contemplation, I think death is just the end of consciousness and bodily function. That's it.

I'm 37 and I would understand that if my karma is such that I suffer some fatal disease I would try to meet it with all the patience and understanding I can muster, fight what I can and the rest I'd cope with accordingly. Just because I'm atheist doesn't mean I'd writhe in bed begging for something illogical.

Oh, the pathetic appeal. If you are dying, then why not take a chance for an afterlife. Does the pathetic appeal ever win you converts? You probably don't care anyway. Most likely, you get brownie points with your congregation just for trying, and that is all that you are after.

It isn't like I could if I wanted. Could you start believing in the Tooth Faerie?
And I know a lot of the regulars. I am 41 and solidly in the middle of the ages. You are way off on the age thing.
