If angels actually exist and God created them, then why would he not let his creation serve him. Why not ask, why did God create any of us, because obviously he doesn't need us for anything.
There are times in the old testament when a certain Angel of the Lord talks to certain men. This angel is believed to be Jesus by Christian Theologians.

Hi,
This is a great question! The good news is, we'll get to ask him all kinds of questions during his thousand year reign. And I'm sure there will be some really great answers for some really tough questions. Seeing that he is the creator, it doesn't surprise me that he has asked angels to act as messengers. After all that's what the word Angel means....messenger.

Great question. We could even expand to include humans. Why doesn't He simply appear to each person individually, instead of having people tell other people? Of course, ultimately we don't know, but God seems to want to share his actions by letting others participate in them. He lets us tell others because in so doing we benefit - we join in His divine action. The same may be true for angels as well. Book recommendation - "Disappointment with God" by Philip Yancey

The word “angel” means “messenger,” and that is another way angels serve God—as his messengers to humans. That'd their role in God's arrangement. =)

Good question. There is a reason why God will use the written word for one message, and angel for another, a prophet for this one, pre-incarnate Jesus for another and God Himself for others.
Haven't really looked in to it, but you got my curiosity going. :)
