Many people who are non-employees, do not realize they are self-employed.
If a person sells items on e-bay, they are self-employed.
If a person does work for someone and they are paid without any withholding, they are self-employed.

It is very confusing for some tax payers.

If you have a 1099-misc with an amount in the non-employee compensation box, then by definition you ARE self-employed.

If you think that you are misclassified and should be treated as an employee, you can request a determination from the IRS on your status, but in the meantime will have to pay your taxes as self-employed.

Why are you filling out a schedule C if you are not self-employed? Income reported on a 1099-Misc does not necessarily need to be reported on a schedule C. It depends on what it is for.

You really ARE self-employed if you have a Form 1099-MISC listing non-employee compensation.
