People in jail want to hear anything. Boring mail is better than no mail. Keep them up to date on the latest gossip, your daily life, and make sure to mention how much they are missed. Also, you could delve into some real deep subjects. People in jail have a tendency to spill all when you write to them. Oh, and jokes are always good.

No you don't. If there's been a restraining order or something like that in your past, that would probably make a difference--or if he requests that your letters not be put through to him. But I've been writing to my uncle who's been inside for about 15 years now, and my letters do reach him, and I only applied to be added to his "approved visitors" list last year. In-person visits are one thing, letters are another. If you've tried writing a few times and not gotten through, and you're pretty sure it's not just because your ex is not wanting to communicate with you, try getting in touch with legal aid services in your area. Good luck.

Whatever they're interested in. A buddy of mine was in jail for about three years. I wrote him often, and we'd share ideas and dreams of the future. I'd also keep him up to date on what's going on, but he was generally better informed about international events than I. I guess when you're in jail, you've got time to catch up on the news.

Do you know the person, or are you just "pen pals"? If you don't know him/her, then you need to try to find common interests, if you have any. If you don't, what's the point? If you do know each other already, then you write about people, places and things the person is familiar with. Any news about the outside world is probably welcome. Just don't make it sound TOO wonderful. If the person's sentence is relatively short, talk about things he/she will be able to do after it's over.

I'd let them know how well I eat and all the pretty women that I see at the mall. I would stress that I wouldn't be able to stand it in jail and I don't know how they can.

You want to make sure everything is okay if they need anything of importance taken care of and if they need anything. You would want someone to do the same for you. Basically make sure theyre okay.
