My family is moving back to America in a few months, and we are looking to get two dogs. We used to have a border collie/aussie mix, but we decided to leave her in the states when we moved to england, so she didnt have to go through the 6 month quarantine peiod. We have reserved a male miniature schnauzer in a shelter, and we are hoping to find another good breed. We will have a large yard and house, and live in the suburbs. I am still in school, but I am going to do competitive obedience, agility and flyball with my dog, regardless of breed. I can offer it about 2 hours of exercise each day once I get home, and my mom will walk it for 20 minutes each morning, and play with it in the yard. We have looked at another australian shepherd and smooth collies. Any other suggestions?
Thanks, Charlotte

you could do a collie. A lab is also a good dog. You might want to get a smaller breed, so your miniature schnauzer doesn't feel intimidated. Try a Yorkshire Terrier!

If you are into agility, Corgis are absoltely great for that and obedience trials. They are super quick at learning. They are also a herding dog like border collies. Larger than small dogs and smaller than medium size dogs. The perfect in between.

Border Collies have TONS of energy, like Austrailian Shephards. Also, I have a doberman who is extremely energetic. Labs love to work and play and young golden retrievers are very playful and make the best family dogs. (I have my second golden after my family's first one died after 13 years) Boxers are good. And shelties do well in some of the competitions you mentioned. One of my mother's clients breeds shelties for agility and whatnot!
Good Luck!

border collies, and smooth coated collies are great, goldens are good for competition, but as we all know, borders are the number one competitive flyball, agility and anything that has to do with that. boxers are great too, i have a boxer and i am teaching him how to jump and i think that i might get him into some neighborhood competitions, but yeah, collies are the best breed for what you would like, good luck.

Other than establishing that you can provide a lot of exercise, you really didn't say what you are looking for in terms of temperament. Given the time you have available, any dog would do well in your care. Do you want a non-shedding dog? Do you want one that is very active? Very intelligent? Easy to train? Frankly, I think you should just go to a shelter and take home whichever one appeals to you.

Australian Shepherds excel at all of the competitions you are interested in and are less intense than border collies, so they make great family dogs.

How about a Jack Russell! They do fabulously with agility and flyball trials! I would just love for a JRT to get to go to such a fabulous home!

Go with another shelter dog....you never know what kind of breed you'll find, plus mixed breeds are great dogs too.
