Only a couple of hours. When they do a culture though they test at 12, 24 and 48 hours to see what if any bacteria have started to grow.

MUCH OF THIS DEPENDS ON THEIR GROWING CONDITIONS. FOR EXAMPLE IN THE MOUTH THE TEMPERATURE IS IDEAL FOR MOST BACTERIA. SO ARE THE FOOD, AND MOISTURE SOURCES ARE ALSO IDEAL. THE FACT IT'S DARK ALSO HELPS THEM TO GROW.
AS FAR AS THE SPEED, THIS DEPENDS ON WHICH TYPE YOU MEAN. THERE ARE DIFFERENT SPEEDS FOR DIFFERENT TYPES.
