Probably because they have crappy jobs and they have to deal with a lot of idiots calling and asking stupid questions. I would imagine they get a lot of prank calls also.

I get paid rather well and work for a large telephone company and enjoy my work. Sure, some fault can be placed on the Rep you speak to but still the same amount can also be blamed on the person making the call. For example, I do not understand the confusion come people suffer when I inform them that their reason their service was interupted was because they have a past due balance of over 500 dollars. I don't see the confusion, you haven't paid your bill in over 4 months and we turned the service off..thats the way it works in society today. Then they proceed to get angry telling us were supposed to tell them before this happens. I'm sure we sent bills to them informing them of the service interuption..but they just didn't bother to open them because they hadn't planned on paying the bill either so..what can be said? Now I think its important that we take a moment and narrow down by what you mean but Telephone Assitance. Do you mean the maker of your telephone (Which surprisingly enough does not mean your local service provider made the phone, they may have sold it, but they didn't make it) Do you mean your local provider? Your long distance provider? Did you have a billing quesiton, technical question?

their not jerks it's just that they are tired in the morning and try to make it through the day with coffee. Plus it's not only the telephone assistant that gets mad, it's the person calling them that gets mad MOST of the time even if it's not the telephone assistants fault. But the telephone assistants can't help but get mad sometimes.

You are mistaken and unfortunate. I have had good experiences with some. I have had my share of bad experiences, but some were very nice and polite. I think it might help if the person asking questions were honest and polite. If someone acts in a mean manner, reply with kindness and sincerity. Nothing says that you have to be rude back. It might make a difference.

I think it is the boredom of the job. Once someone has been asked the same question 800 times a day, she / he gets testy. There is no reason for this already, that is the nature of the job.

Because they have such a simple job.
And it doesn't matter if they're nice or not - they get paid the same, they don't have to see you face to face, and you have no idea who they are.
And they probably hate their job. I would.
