This has been happening for weeks if not months. Rob had some pointed comments on this issue awhile back.
I don't know whether people are being malicious, trying to be funny, or are just clueless, but the number of totally wrong answers, and the number of thumbs-downs on correct answers, is really bad in the tax section.
It seems like just about everyone feels qualified to give tax advice, whether or not they know what they're talking about.

I have totally noticed that! I have received thumbs down on answers that were totally correct--in fact posters after me have posted the same exact answer I have, but yet they get a thumbs up and I get a thumbs down! I just got a best answer to a tax question that I answered and I had 3 thumbs down on it and only 1 thumb up...and yet several people that answered AFTER I did and said the same exact thing, got 3 thumbs up!!! Go figure!
Where is the justice?! LOL!
Just for the record, when I see a correct answer that someone gives I always give a thumbs up just to support the person. What's the point of thumbs-dowing a legitimate answer anyway?

I'm getting some thumbs down on my answers. I think it is because they don't like the answer even though it is the correct one.
I have been a tax professional for 16 years and an Enrolled Agent since 2002 (I'm not sure how many answerers know what an Enrolled Agent is)

We all do get our share, that's for sure. I've jammed a few of the worst offenders of bad advice if they allow e-mail and suspect that I'm getting their wrath with some thumbs downs since they don't have the guts to reply directly. Oh well! I'ts only an icon and a number!

Yes, I've seen the same thing. One thing in particular that I have noticed is the spike in answers by people who weren't around the tax categories in the first few months of tax season. I suspect that there are some people who just roam YA! looking for questions on which to get points, and the Tax category is going to be more prominent right now.
Regardless, it isn't very difficult to tell who knows their stuff; most of the people I've seen with "Top Contributor" badges for the Tax categories generally have them for good reason.

I'm not an expert, but it seems people pic the answer they want to hear, not necessarily the best answer.

Yeah, but people who answer or vote for that matter don't necessarily know what they are talking about.
