Tattoos are different for everyone and every tattoo. I have 3 of them myself and I can tell you that the smallest one I have was the most painful...The pain usually depends on where you're getting it and what your tolerance is. To me, it's like a mixture of stinging, burning and pinching all at once, but once the tat is finished, the pain is pretty much done, unlike piercings that ache for a while.
This site might help explain it better for you...

Yes, it does hurt. Anyone who says it doesn't is lying. But the pain is different for different people. It depends on your threshold for pain. And it also depends on the part of your body you get it on. I got one on my back and one on my chest and they hurt less than the ones I got on my ankles. First the artist put an outline of the tattoo on...it's a lot like a temporary tattoo. Then once you and the tattoo artist agree it's in the right spot they start with the outline. In my opinion this part is more of a cutting feeling, once the outline is done they start with the coloring, to me this is more of a burning feeling. When all is said and done, there is some bleeding (the tattoo is basically a giant cut) It pretty much burns for the rest of the day. Then it's sore for a little while and it gets really scabby and gross a few days later. After about a week or two it's healed and looks beautiful. Of course healing depends on where you get it and how you take care of it. You have to wash it gently every day and keep putting lotion on it. If you really want one I suggest you do it. I have four and plan on getting at least two more. Just do some research and find a good tattoo artist and make sure you pick something you love.

It feels like little scratches, but after a while your skin goes numb and it's just a tingling sensation. It realy depends on the location and size of the tatt as to how much it hurts. Only get one if it is something you realy want and it will still mean something to you 50 years from now. But once the tatt is done, so is the pain. Some people are a little sensitive for a couple days but that's it.

It's always felt like a hot knife to me. Or like I'd imagine a hot knife, but I haven't ever been into burning and scarification - just ink. By my nipple and underarm it really hurt! Felt like a major titty twister, and by my underarm it bruised up about the size of a quarter. Other than those sensitive areas, it just felt like a hot knife to me. I can only go 3 - 3 1/2 hours and my threshhold has been reached.
My sister got a 6 hour tattoo one Sat. I was joking that she wouldn't be able to take it all, but she did. I don't think I could - but she doesn't think it's all that painful.
So I guess it depends on the person.

It hurts. It just depends on what part of your body your get it done as to how bad it hurts. Fatty parts of your body hurt the least. The best way I can describe it, is it feels like a cat is scratching you over and over in the same spot. And even though it hurts, it is an addictive pain. However, don't get one if you're bored!

It feels like a delicate flower gliding across your skin. Actually, moron, it hurts. Many tiny needles are jabbing into your skin. Of course it hurts. However, it is not an unbearable sort of hurting. It's actually not too terribly bad at all. Afterwards it feels similar to a sunburn and that feeling goes away in a couple days.

I just got back from the tattoo parlor and recieved my first tattoo, I'm not going to tell you there was no pain, But for me i have a high tolerance for pain, You really can't describe what it feels like, for me i have never felt something like that...The artist told me that it can feel like someone scratching at your sunburn, but it did'nt for me, I can't describe it...
When he hit a nerve i felt it, but for the most part i was actually falling asleep...lol I got it on my left calve...It took him 2 hours to do my tattoo.
Here is a picture of my new tattoo: If you have myspace you can go to it, it's on page 3 of pictures:

YES it does. NO it doesn't. It depends upon where you get it. It also depends upon you. Fleshy parts do not hurt as bad as the back of your hand for example. Use your nails and pinch yourself really hard. That is what it feels like, but non-stop until it is finished. On parts like your hand or ankle etc., it will feel twice as bad. This feeling is non-stop until the tattoo is finished.

It feels like a centralized sunburned. Sometimes it throbs while healing, like a deeply skinned knee or arm. Neck and elbow are the worst I've heard. I can't prove that because I want to have a good job.

No it doesnt really hurt. To me it feels like someone is scratching me. I have small tattoos as well as a half sleeve. It is seriously bearable. Not nearly as bad as people say.
