I don't want the wine to be too strong and also under $20. Also I don't want to have to go to a rare wine shop to find it either. I'm just looking to try a couple different red wines for casual drinking. Any favorites? Thanks!

My favorite is Ravenswood Zinfandel or Blackstone Merlot. They are very versatile and go with many food pairings.

If your moniker indicates you are a New Yorker head yourself to Trader Joe's Union Square store and you'll find plenty, including TJ's infamous "2 Buck Chuck" (Charles Shaw brand) and "3 Buck Moe" (J.W. Morris brand).

Otherwise: FYI the May, 2006 "Decanter" (considered the world's best wine magazine) ranked as the world's best widely available red wine for the money the Concha y Toro Caseillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon. In the USA it averages between $ 6.50 to $ 9.00 per bottle.

I have noted also a recent "Decanter" website advertisement
informing that it's latest issue includes an updated list of it's writers and critics' choice of the world's 50 best wine values. If it is not in your local library, you can probably find "Decanter" at any good wine store, of which there are many in metro New York.

Here are some nice, drinkable wines under $20:

Six Prong Red
Pepe Sangiovese
Cycles Gladiator Syrah
House Red
Maryhill Reserve Sangiovese (this may be a little more than $20)
Amberhill Cabernet
Il Bastardo
Chiaramonte
Casillero del diablo Cabernet Sauvignon

All these are ready to go and I've seen them everywhere from my local wine shop to Trader Joe's to CostCo to my local grocery store.

OK NY. Here goes. When I peel back the paper bag, I see I'm drinking Gallo Red Rose. 1.75 litres for $5.99.

So I'm joking about the brown bag. But Gallo is a very good wine, you get alot, not bitter, no tanic acid (or very little - you know, that "barrelly flavor" some of the Napa wines have)

and for me, surprisingly, I can drink the whole bottle without getting a hangover or headache. Overall, an excellent wine for the price.

My favorite every-day wine is a Napa Valley wine called Coastal Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon. It retails from $4.99 to $6.99 depending when you buy it.

This wine is dark and supple with layers of blackberry, currant and herb nuances.

I found out about while listening to a NPR interview about 12 years ago... They were talking to a guy who bought wines for the airlines and he recommended it... I buy it by the case (actually, 3 cases at a time) when my local Harris Teeter Supermarket has a 15% off/case sale. Many times it is on sale during the case sale.

I'm trying to think here. I drink red wine all the time, just have none here for reference!!!
Ummmm, I like Mondavi and Yellowtail, Ravenswood, BV Coastal, Black Swan, Three Blind Moose, Luna de Luna. I like merlots and cabernets, but sometimes they have a bitter taste. (to me anyway) The BV Zin is good. I think I like shiraz the best. I had something the other night (bad memory) it was a shiraz-grenache? Siraz-merlot? something. I prefer those. A blend of two different kinds of red. Anyway, I like to try new wines from time to time, broaden my pallete. I think most of those wines are between $8-12.

If you have a Trader Joe's store near you, there are lots of good, inexpensive wines there. I can recommend a brand called 121 and Black Mountain. (I've seen both in stores besides Trader Joe's, but they have the best prices.) Both come in merlot and cabernet. They're around $7-$8 per bottle.

Ecco Domani Merlot. It is in a black bottle and you can get it at any wine store or even grocery stores that sell wine. It is about $14-16 a bottle. It is a dry wine but I think it is the best for its price.

I can tell you that Lockwood Red wine is so awsome. It is not a cheap wine nor a real expensive wine. It is so great! Romantic Red!
