After all, whether you're talking about new friends, employees, doctors, caretakers for elderly family members, or even significant others, you, as a citizen, have a right to know whether the people you surround yourself with are who they say they are. This goes double in any situation that involves your children, which not only includes teachers and babysitters, but also scout masters, little league coaches and others. It depends on her tribe. If you know which tribe she belonged to, you can contact the tribal vital statistics office. However, some privacy laws may be in place.

If you are not sure about her tribe, try finding her in the US Federal Census, sometimes instead of Indian or Native American, the actual tribe is listed. The 1900 and 1910 censuses on reservations had a seperate listing for Native Americans living on the reservation.

You may also be able to find her in Federal Records kept by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. There were numerous censuses conducted on reservations by the federal goverment. Many of these are available on microfilm at a Federal Records Repository or can be ordered at a family history center of the LDS church.

Good Luck!

The Dawes rolls were only for 5 tribes. There are over 100 tribes recognized by the US government...so most aren't registered there...and Grandma would have to have lived in the late 1800s to be there.

The first place to start is to familiarize yourself with the records available. The following link at the Bureau of Indian Affairs site may help. http://www.doi.gov/genealogic.html

You hopefully know the name of the tribe with which she's affiliated. They would have her registration information and as long as Grandma is dead they should share it with you. If she's still alive then she needs to contact them herself. Also, the BIA does keep registration info on current tribal members...they just don't do longitudinal tracking.

If you don't know the tribe with which she was affiliated, you'll have to do some legwork and contact all that are possibilities until you find the one with her registration info.

Good luck on your search.

Search Dawes Roll

Skip above posted some of the common places where you can search the various known "Indian" rolls, of course, the Dawes rolls are the best known.
Before doing that.. a few things need to be shared. Your ancestor MAY have actually been enrolled, and information in your family might support that. MANY MANY families have a tradition that there is Native ancestry (most often Cherokee) in their history, and of those, it is very often simply a belief that isn't factual. In addition, not all Native families chose to be enrolled, since they felt it to be demeaning, OR they were Native..but lacked access to records to confirm it.
You need to "work" your lineage back to gr grandma, making sure you have as much info about siblings, parents, aunts, uncles, so forth. The reason for this is that she herself might not have been shown.. but known relatives were. Unless you have the background, you COULD be looking at her family, and not recognize it as such.

cyndislist is one of my favorite places for extensive resources. Here is her page for Native american research...you may find something here of value.

Yes, the Dawes roll. That's the list of Indians that were sent on the Trail of Tears. My great-great grandfather was Chief John Ross who was one of the leaders of the Cherokees on that trip.
There is a lot of info out there, but you need birthdates to be specific because alot of Indians had the same first and last names.
