Everybody bags their own groceries here in the Netherlands, and I think most places in Europe 'cause I can't remember ever having anyone bag groceries for me on a European holiday either... haven't been to a supermarket that had anyone to bag it since I left the US. Only really disabled folks get help, anyone who's just old has to bag their own.

Usually there's about two baggers for every three checkers. They're paid to put the groceries in the bags. More stores are forgoing this to save money and some people help the cashier bag, some don't. It's not rudeness, its just that the elderly especially are used to someone bagging for them (and occasionally *gasp* helping them take the groceries out to the car).
Whether or not I help bag is directly proportional to how much of a hurry I'm in. And I've been shot more than a few dirty looks for bagging my own groceries

I think the situation depends upon where one shops.
At the grocery where I shop, the cashiers do the bagging. The bags are in the cashier's work area. I couldn't help bag if I wanted to.
At some other shops, I will try to bag to keep the line moving and to help the cashier. I usually shop very early in the morning, and the baggers (young men, mostly) are in school.
"Old folks" as you say, probably shouldn't be bagging their groceries to prevent injuries. They would hold up the line more- being very slow.
Be patient. Some day you will be an "old folk" and you would want the same courtesy.

I don't know... I always help bag my groceries if its just the checker working and I have a lot of things. But if I have just a couple bags worth the checker is usually done by the time I'm done sliding my card and entering pin number and such for paying. And if there's a bagger there then it doesn't really matter because that's their job...I work at a clothing store and I don't expect people to put away what they try on just because I'm the only one there-its' my job just like it's the grocery clerks job to bag the groceries.

I would think it would be a little rude to not help out if the store is short handed especially, if the lines are backed up and their aren't enough people bagging then yeah it's kinda rude to make your cashier finish checking you out and then for you to stand there while they bag your groceries too, and besides you can probably bag better than they can anyway, because they don't care if your bread gets squashed. I would say help if you can, now if someone is already bagging your groceries don't step in a help because then it looks like you are a control freak, so if there is enough staff, let em do their job, if not help them out. that's what I'd say.

Where I live, no one bags their own groceries. I guess I would if that option was available to me. Though I guess every part of the country is different. I was telling a friend in South Carolina that I had been to the grocery store and had two small, light bags and that they had offered to carry them out to the car for me. She told me that where she lives none of the stores carry out groceries at all anymore. I suppose if I came to your area I would be one of those rude shoppers who didn't bag her own groceries, until I learned that others do it.

No offense but it is the workers job to bag the groceries. Reason being because they are the one getting paid to do it. But every once in a while a nice shopper comes along and will bag there own groceries..

Some grocery stores (big box boys) expect you to bag your own groceries - under the ruse that it is saving you money. NOT!
Some baggers don't know how to bag properly, i.e., put meat products in with veggies and fruit (argh). Bread in with canned product you end up with a mushed up lump of glutenous mass.
Sometimes I bag my own stuff, simply because the cashier is too slow and I want to end the wonderful world of grocery shopping as quickly as possible and get outta there!

I think it depends on the grocery store. Some have baggers, in which case, obviously they do it. Others, the checker bags, and I've been to a few that you do it yourself. If they have physical limitations, then I don't see a problem with them not doing it themselves. A lot of places also offer carry out service. So no, I don't think it's rude, but it depends on the situation.

Not all grocers hire people to bag groceries for the customer. Sometimes the customer has to bag their own. It's not rude one way or the other. However, if a bagger is obviously being lazy and is not bagging, I would call that rude.
