...and all the claims that we are trying to oppress religion are just last ditch cries of religion losing its power?

Or is religion slowly creeping deeper and deeper into our government and all the talk is just an attempt to rally the troups?

Based on the amount of money raised by secular political candidates, and based on current political polls...

I believe that the US will be exiting from the "born again king" and his zealots of deception. Most people, even people of faith, are sick to death of fundamentalism.

Religion is slowly creeping deeper and deeper into our government and all the talk is just an attempt to rally the troops. If religion was slowing losing its grip on the U.S., then what's wrong with gays having the same rights as the straights?

Religion has gone up and down on its grip of the U.S. One one hand you have freedom of religion, separation of church and state, a large mix of many different religions and denominations of those religions, or lack of religion completely. On the other hand you have "faith-based initiatives", politicians with strong political views, and large communities of strong willed religious observers who believe they are the only ones who are right. But if you watch what has happened in the past, and what is happening now, and you look at American's different religious views today, there seems to be a reasonable answer to your question. Religion is necessarily loosing its grip on the U.S. but its grip on the U.S. is changing. We are not a country of any one particular religion or denomination, we truly are a mix of all areas of the spectrum. I see the U.S potentially heading towards an even representation of religion thought society, and a government that reflects that (hopefully). Religion is used by some as a rally call, but those people are on different sides of different issues. One thing about the position of religion in America and our government is certainly true: it will always be changing, for better or worse.

Phoenix...as a Christian I wish I could tell you religion was losing power as far as our government was concerned, but I fear just the opposite is true. I have said this many times now...the fundamentalist right is running the show. Yeah, they will go ahead with a few bits to toss at the hoards...no ORGANIZED prayer in school, no ten commandments in the court house...while they are influencing the federal budget, constitutional policy and foreign affairs.

As far as losing power overall...religion...not Christianity now..I am not speaking to that...is not; more and more world belief systems are growing steadily. As far as Christianity and Judaism are concerned...they have ebbed and flowed for 2000 years through different periods of time...I expect the same will continue until we burn ourselves up with global warming or blow each other up with nuc's....and that is why I worry who has their fingers on the danged buttons.

Yes, religion is slowly losin its grip. The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) is one of the organizations responsible.
Also, the Kansas Board of education now has a rule that no
one can question evolution ( e.g. Someone asks why evolution is true). Those are just some of the ways religion is losin its grip On the US.

"We have religion so we don't kill the rich" -- Napoleon Bonaparte. And yet, he had the church of Rome come to him to administer a formal coronation ceremony as emperor. No, religion is coming in and coming in strong. It will probably wear a turban, wear a beard, simplify education and request frequent drug testing.

Religion has been out of government for a long time now. Government is now run solely on avarice.

Perceptions... that's all they are, THEIR perceptions. Reality is taking a grip and marginalizing the haters and it's bugging the skivvies off of 'em.

Don't get me started on the whole King Bush thing... I'll lose all semblance of loving-kindness I think.

I don't know. But the phrase "death throes" popped into my head and that's all I really wanted to say.

I love a good turn of phrase, and some of them you can rarely bring up in a conversation.

Sorry, just chatting! Thumb me down!

I think the Church and State Seperation debate is central to the difference between Republicans and Democrats in modern America,

Democrats won in 2006.
