It varies....

I can only tell you what I did w/ my son....

When my son was 10 months, I took his pacifier. I believe I picked the perfect time for him because he showed no reaction at all. He has been pacifier free ever since. He is now 1 year old.

That's what worked for me:)

The longer you wait the harder it is going to be to take it away and the damage that can be caused by the pacifier is horrifying. I personally didn't ever give my daugther a pacifier cause she didn't care for it. But, 75% of the people out there who had children that had pacifiers had a higer rate of childhood tooth decay. My nephews had to have two of his front teeth removed do to what they refer to as "Bottle Rot" caused by prolonged usage of the pacifier. This is not pinpoint every person out there; my sister just happened to be lazy and didn't care that my nephew was on it for such a long time. I think before six months personally anything after that will be and addictive habit for the baby and they will fight you if trying to take away.

I think as soon as possible is the right time my son took himself off the pacifier at 6 months old, but my daughter who is 2 year old just finally got off the binky last week and it took a lot of research {on YahooAnswers} but I finally found an idea that I liked and it worked with her. I looked at her one day and said "Do You Want To Be A Big Girl>????" she said UH-HUH and I said throw it in the trash, she did and when she turned her back i took it out of the trash can and stuck it in my bra {odd place I know but it was the one place she couldn't feel} and then when she went back for it I told him the trash monster ate it. And she cried for a second and went on about her business. And everytime she has asked for ti since then the trash monster ate.

it really depends on the child. if they use it frequently, start trying to ween them from it. BUt i'd say when they start teething, or talking its time to take the pacifier away. you dont dont want your child to have the pacifier when they're talking because it creates a speech problem.

I would suggest taking away anywhere from 6 months to 12 months depending on how often the use it.

My Dr. says 12 months. I took my daughter's away at 11 months and she was fine without it.
I didn't go cold turkey though - first I only allowed it with naps/bedtime for a week, then just bedtime for a week. Final step was no paci.

Take it away before 14 months, right after you wean the bottle is a good time. If you wait longer it makes it that much harder. SD

I have three children.

The boys both just stopped using it at eight months.

My daughter needed it longer. By the age of two I stopped buying them and when the last one was gone that was it.

I think that just depends on the parents and the child. Whenever you and your child are ready. Good Luck!
