Most linguists consider the South Slavic languages (Serbocroatian, Macedondian, Bulgarian) to be a tad closer to Eastern Slavic (Russian, Belorussian, Ukrainian) than the Western Slavic languages (Czech, Slovak, Lusatian / Sorbian, Kashubian, Polabian, Polish etc.).

Some Slavicists consider Slovak to be somewhat of a bridge language between the eastern, western and southern forms of Slavic. A few consider Ukrainian to be almost a bridge language in the family too.

However, generally speaking, all of the Slavic languages are more similar to each other than the different Celtic, Romance and Germanic languages are to each other. One theory for this is that the ancient Slavs had a strong oral tradition that stayed with them wherever they went in Europe.
