Live in a rural area. New construction. There's no trees, none! We have an acre and a half, its long and narrow. The back yard butts up to the back yards of two neighbors along the right side and to our next door neighbor on the other side. Any ideas on how to create a fun space would be great. Thanks

Well there so many things you can do. Drive around and look at other yards for a few ideas. In back you can have a Grill and Picnic Table. Buy a few trees at Home Depot or Lowe's, Nurseries etc. I will advise you research your trees. Maples grow fast, but, their roots are right on top of the ground and not good for mowing. Oaks are nice trees but grow slow. Think about future Mature size for spacing. Flower beds I use a thick hardwood mulch 4-6 inches deep. It keep weeds and grass down and weeds that do come up are easy to grab and pull root and all, throw in the yard and the sun bake them. When you mow always point the blow hole away from the flower beds or you easily can resow grass. Buy plants that are common for the area. Exoctic stuff look cool but need more maintence. When you driving around look for an Elderly Lady working in her flowers and stop and talk. Many times they know a lot of free advise and become a source for some free flowers. Just remember to think of pay back when you have something. Make everything flow not square it off. You may want to jump on the riding mower and mow in an easy way to outline for flower beds, then when you mow you just curve around everything without having to back up all the time. Trees are mulched so the mower circle around in one turn. If the grass is nice you can think of some fun things like Badmittion and Volley Ball and Crochet. Just have things easy to put up and take down so they not interfer with yard maintence. Well, I can write you a book, and this I hope will help.
Do not forget Bird Baths, Feeders and Houses.

I just saw an episode of landscaping by design, I believe, the one where 3 designers bid on the job? Anyway, they did a huge backyard like what you describe. Try logging on hgtv.com, & look at the landscaping shows, they may have that video, or another one that'll have great ideas with how to's so you can do it yourself. I believe they did separate gardens, a fire pit, trees & a patio in that episode.
