Glitterkittyy is both right and cute. And those who say that America's laws were based on the ten commandments have a fundamental misunderstanding of both the laws and the commandments. But that describes most Americans and most Christians.

It doesn't work here because people can go look them up, but I love asking Christians in person if they can name all the commandments. I don't think I have to tell you how funny it is. I don't do this to be mean; I really can't believe that people believe things that they know nothing about.

without the law given to us humans through Moses by God some 2000 years ago we would not know right from wrong...this is why we were given the laws.
Not one jot or tittle did Christ change of the laws and do away with either as some believe...it's all written in the Bible,God's letter to us, his children
TheWord has never changed in all this time either..amazing..
there is nothing new under the sun.

Not neccessarily, killing an enemy and sacking their loot has been considered the right thing to do in many times and places. It is even true in our history. We killed, destroyed, and stole from people ( or they did from us)The ten commandments solidifies that those who believe in the God of the Bible should abstain from such practices, love and pray for their enemies. Killing and stealing was how your kingdom, wealth, and reputation grew. Fear kept others from attacking you. It was often only forbidden to kill or steal amoung your own people. I would like to think most societies are beyond this mindset, but I don't think we are just naturally born knowing it's wrong.

If I may say for those who mentioned the Hammurabi, Buddhist etc. codes, the 10 commandments came to us first. These religions/ traditions came much much later. The conscience however, is a universal law of truths.

Romans 2:15, 16

For when the Gentiles who do not have the law by nature observe the prescriptions of the law, they are a law for themselves even though they do not have the law. They show that the demands of the law are written in their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even defend them on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge people's hidden works through Christ Jesus

The Ten Commandments have give us more than a spiritual compass, they have provided us with a Moral Compass as well. Without the ten Commandments, we would be a lost society. As it is, Even with the Commandments which most people in the world ignore, we are on our way to a world filled with hatred, and whee anything and everything goes.

Yes. This is basic morality. Think about it, did the Israelites have a free for all theiving/killing spree before Moses came down from Sinai?

With out a God concept--that would be a self determined question, In other words: It could be right It could be justified it could be wrong.
What ever that person chooses to believe about it at that time.

You never heard of laws? Society has these nifty little rules to live by, they are called laws. You break them you go to jail. Pretty easy to figure out right and wrong when you go to jail for doing something wrong.

Hindus, Buddhists and other faiths must think theft and murder are OK since they don't have the 10 commandments.
