Having your mother do facial exercises, like opening and closing her mouth will start to strengthen the muscles. Also it's good to get flash cards with letters and numbers and have her read them until she can start talking better. You will probably need to have her go to a physical therapist to help with full rehabilitation. Be patient - it takes time.

I am sorry to hear all of this and hope this helps you. A stroke can paralyze (temporarily or Permanently) some muscles.. The best course of action I can tell you is light Physical Therapy i.e. moving the left side of body starting off with no weight and slowly add some weight. Working on speech daily just practicing saying words and sounds. The muscles have been weakened by the stroke and this may help to rebuild them.. Its like having to learn things all over again. If you don't see any improvement after a few weeks of this I would consult another physician. Good Luck

A stroke is essentially a bruise inside the brain (this is a very simplified explanation). The effects of a stroke are most effectively treated during the week to two weeks immediately after the injury. Just like a bruise, there is a healing period. The permanent damage that remains is caused by scar tissue that develops as a result of the healing process. So, typically, the two weeks after a stroke are the most crucial time for "exercising" damaged areas fo the brain in order to retain as much function as possible. After a couple of weeks, the damage will be healed, and wahtever affects that are left over will most likely be permanent.

It can take the body a long time to recover from even a mild stroke. Sometimes hours, sometimes months or years, if at all.

Just wait it out and follow the advise of the physician. Therapy is involved to improve motor function if it is not improving on its own.

Stroke is the interruption of blood flow to the brain. AS your mother received medical attention immediately, the damage will be limited and she could recover fully from the side effects. For more details, please visit http://ailments.in/stroke.html
