Fossil watches are one of a group of watches with notches on the back that require a tool called a spanner wrench to open it. Watch repairers have a tool that takes different studs for the shape of the notches (or holes) which are adjusted for the width. (Some watches have notches but they are decoration and the back is pried off - a person wanting to get in must look carefully for the slot that takes the edge tool.)
The watch spanner is flat so a person can hold the watch in the palm and press the wrench with the thumb. The watch may also be held in a vise clamp designed for the purpose.

Fossil stores change batteries and reseal the water resistant seal all for $10. And if they damage the watch, they take the blame and will replace it. And all fossils are covered by an 11 year warranty. So if it isn't working, they will check the serial number, and if it's younger than 11 years, they will fix it for free by sending it to Texas (takes a few weeks) or they will offer you 50% off another watch in the store. Brand new. Take it to fossil.

By the way big tics have 2-5 batteries inside! And they're complicated because they have two movements inside.
