I volunteer several hours every week in different areas of our church-----because there is a need that I can fill, and the church cannot pay somebody to do it.
I also voluntarily help around my neighborhood all the time----that is what we should do.
I go on missions trips, and pay for it myself----I want to be involved in what God is doing.

The first is our town's volunteer fire brigade and that's to help protect our house and the small town we live in. I believe in doing it because it's a social responsibility to protect one another.
The second is we run the local Scouts and Cubs because it gives our children something healthy and constructive to do and the reason is the last people to run it racked up a $2000 debt because they didn't know how to manage it properly.
The final thing is the town's Show Society that provides the agricultural show for the town and again on the committee it's to make sure it's managed properly and everyone enjoys themselves at the annual show.
Everyone has a social responsibility to where we live to do as much as we can, the best way we can. If you do nothing then you get nothing.

I used to volunteer at a hospital when I was in high school. I used to help with filing, answering phones, etc. Why? I needed something to do after school. It also gave me some valuable work experience at an early age. Of course, that was a long time ago...

Yes. I tutor kids in my spare time. I also belong to soroptomists and I have volunteered for presidential campaigns.
Where? Locally.
Why? Because those things matter to me. I'm an atheist. If I don't work to make the world a better place in my spare time, my life has less meaning.

Yes I volunteer for a lot of groups. I volunteer at soup kitchens, special olympics, tutoring. In college, I even helped out with domestic violence (it's not for me).
I helped with habitat for humanity a couple times. I enjoyed meeting people. It was great fun and it was something to do that week besides play on the computer.
Currently I volunteer at the Animal Shelter. And I am a registered volunteer at the hospital (though its on need based and so not that frequently)
All local things--either local to me here or local to my parents on w/es. My husband and I live in the middle of nowhere so we go back to where our friends live and parents live most w/es.
I volunteer b/c it makes me feel good. I don't need some sort of eternal reward. I am just volunteering b/c it makes me feel like I'm helping out mankind. I also think that you never know how much this really means to this person. "Pass it on." Perhaps I might help someone in the hospital, that person remembers my kindness and helps someone else out. Or by helping an animal, that puppy might be adopted by someone that trains him to help blind people. That might allow the person to get out more, meet someone and have a child that grows up to find the cure for cancer. You never know how one lil action can spring on and have a life of its own.
I guess I just feel like it's the right thing to do. Humans need each other to survive. We should help someone, just b/c it helps them. Return a wallet just so the other person doesn't have to go through the hassle of everything--not b/c you hope they will give you $50. Helping out at Special Olympics just makes me have hope in mankind. These kids have so much against them, yet are full of positive energy. They compete just to prove they can, not b/c they have to win. And in todays dog-eat-dog world, I guess I just need to see that there are people out there like that.

Yep, quite a bit.
I choose to run fund raising events, for Muscular Distrophy research (my uncle has MS), Cerebral palsy and US veterans. It is fun, I don't make it about asking people for money, I throw themed parties and organize golf/card/dart tournaments. Last year I was able to raise over $30K for these causes and had a blast doing it.
I got to hang with friends, like I would on any weekend, play Golf, play cards, play darts, have parties like Cinco de Mayo parties, Kentucky Derby parties etc. Got a few drunks on and raised a bunch of money for people who actually need it.
Its easy and fun and more people would feel a whole lot better about themselves if they would give it a shot.

My objectivist philosophical view has caused me to produce many values automatically, so I have an abundance of stuff to share and very little effort to produce it, so actually all my time is volunteer. I make money automatically.
So if you truly are interested in helping others learn to effectively help yourself, the rest will come automatically with no effort at all. here is a start...

No. I advocate it for others but don't put my money where my mouth is. That makes me the worst type of hypocrite.
There is an explanation though. I have RA, struggle to walk and don't drive. If I were able, I would.
