Handheld SAMs (ie. Stinger) are usually less than 10 Km.
Vehicle SAMs (ie. Patriot) are usually around 35-40km.
There are some Russian large systems that have 200km range and rumours of a 400km system coming out.

actually, try googling this...you may be able to find out.
most early SAMS were able to knock out high flying bombers/U-2 spy planes....but I don't think the latest generation has changed all that much...considering most modern weapons are either stealthy (avoids SAM radar networks) or are extremely fast...
