It's Not How Much You Drink, It's How Fast You Drink It.
Drinking too much water can lead to a condition known as water intoxication and to a related problem resulting from the dilution of sodium in the body, hyponatremia. Water intoxication is most commonly seen in infants under six months of age and sometimes in athletes.
When too much water enters the body's cells, the tissues swell with the excess fluid. Theoretically, cells could swell to the point of bursting.
From the cell's point of view, water intoxication produces the same effects as would result from drowning in fresh water.
The bottom line is this: it's possible to drink too much water, but unless you are running a marathon or an infant, water intoxication is a very uncommon condition.

Less is dangerous and excess is dangerous.
if you drink more water then kidney will start to dilute urine. but if you drink excessively then kidney wont be able to keep up with it. it also depends on how much water do you drink at a time. like if you drink 2-3 lts at a time then it sure harm you.
2-3 lts per day is necessary by human to excrete waste products from body and also for normal metabolisms of body.
if you do exercise and perspirates a lot then you feel thursty and need more water then other days.
but at baseline drink 7-8 glass at least per day.
