The Christian God is far too hateful.

I think that life would probably be better if there was a loving, peaceful and knowable God, but there is absolutely no good reason (from my point of view anyway) to think that such a being exists. If God does exist, all the difficulty and injustice in life suggests that God is tyrannical and sadistic or simply doesn't give a crap about us.

Hmmmm....I am not just going to give a cynical answer here, no matter how much I want to.
If I had it my way, yes, there would be a loving god who would prevent all really horrible things from happening, yes. Why not? Why do we need child rape and religious persecution and torture in our world? There is no need for it, and if god existed, I would want that god to make sure that sort of stuff would never happen. I think things might be a bit better if that stuff never happened.

If the presence of a God meant that the world would be different than it now is (full of hate, ignorance and intolerance despite the alleged existence of a supreme being) I would vote for God. However, if you empirically proved the existence of God by showing him to us and publishing his address or photos of God partying with Lindsey Lohan (so there would be no doubt of his existence in the world) and the world was exactly as it is now, I would vote for no God.

Well, if there is a god, he certainly isn't loving!!!! Take a look around you, innocent children suffering and dying by the minute, husbands beating their wives for no good reason, war for the singular purpose of keeping those in the business of making guns/warcraft in lots of money, etc etc etc!!!
I'd rather think that there ISN'T a god. It certainly is better than thinking there IS one and he's this bad to us!!!!

What would a God be able to do without taking away human freewill?
If a God does anything he is stopping people from making their own choices. Even if those choices are negative. Mistakes are the only way we learn!

I think the existence of a loving and patient deity would be a good thing.
It could be none of the ones of which we currently have stories as none of them meet the criteria.
But yes, the existence of a loving, patient god would be awesome.
Pity we're living in the real world, not a hypothetical one.

usually, us atheists just think that there should be no god, while others think that the current god is just to hateful.
me on the other hand, i think that god is a deity who is punishing US ofr his own mistake, he made us, we ate from his garden, gained inteligence,he punished us, we retailiated years later by disowning him.
if he did not want us to eat from the Tree, then why did god make the Tree? why not just keep us un-inteligent and be puppets of his to command? and when we became to smart that we started to disown any christian, he sent a flood and saved only his beleivers, along with uninteligent animals. I just think he is a cruel, sadistic god who punishes his own creations for his personal pleasure.

Depends on the god, of course. Spinoza's god might be preferable to no god at all but most of the other ones are not to my taste and I would prefer they don't exist.
