Sure, it's a gimmick.
It's not a con - they're not lying. It's not just car dealers that use this technique either.

Most people today buy cars based on what they can afford. Average joe worker can afford a "$10,000" car. This is just another way to try to bring customers in the door. Instead of advertising each week, why not make the name of the business the advertisement.
Car industry is hurt, very hurt, since 9/11. I have worked this industry for the past 15 yrs easy and since 9/11 we have been on a greased slope. Each year it picks up speed.
I myself am a cosmetics and paint expert (touch up paint guy). Just in the last 3 years alone it has gotten so bad my town, Cincinnati (over 1 million) has gone from 3 major companies and 17 independent vendors to just 4 independent vendors. I am one that is left and you see me sitting here typing to you in the middle of the day instead of working, so that shows how little work there really is now.
Dealers are like any other business, they are trying to stay in business during these hard times. And it seems cars have taken the hardest hit. I see dealers collapse every month and its gonna get worse. When GM, Ford or Chrysler folds you will see a shock wave through the economy that will make the 1920's depression look like a 2 hour black out.
Dealers are not the "con's" most think. That image comes from less than 1% of the dealers out there. The confusion comes from most don't realize how the car industry works, nothing more.

each between the individuals who declare that the salesperson makes a fortune advertising a motor vehicle is a lot off base! the salesperson is paid a proportion of the earnings on the deal, yet which would be little or no. whilst i replaced into advertising new autos, the minimum fee replaced into $50. This meant that if the customer have been given a great deal, we'd make little or no. frequently the individuals who combat the toughest for each penny have been additionally people who concept that we we creating lots of money on them, and we had ripped them off!! there is extra earnings in a used motor vehicle than in a sparkling one, yet nevertheless that's uncommon for a salesperson to make countless hundred funds on a deal! If the guy you're coping with is going out of their way that may assist you, and additionally you elect to furnish them a tip, be happy. I assure that in case you have a provider subject later, the salesperson will do lots extra that may assist you (which isn't in all probability his job) than in case you act like they owe you some thing!!

NEVER pay the asking price.
make sure there is always something wrong with a car, the seat is sunk, it is a poor colour, the mileage is too high for the year, a scratch on the glass. anything to reduce the price.
buy at the end of a month or a quarter. sales targets are due.
a sales manager has more authority to cut the price more than a junior salesman

Truth in advertising! It is not a con or a gimmick. What did you expect? YOU read too much into the ad. Learn to read, carefully.
Most businesses comply with the law. Report the ones that lie to the BBB, the media, to your local politicians and to your Chamber of Commerce.

The worst ones are when they have a late model car thats selling for like 2000 dollars...when you get to the lot, they are like...oh we sold that already...This happens even if you are the first person on the lot on the first day they advertise the car!!!

But wait, there's more......
If you're one of the next ## callers....
Only ## left at this price.....
If you act now........
Hurry before they're all gone........
Price and participation may vary.......
Don't miss out on ........
My favorite is "We've got to sell them all before.....".
So what happens if they don't "sell them all before...? Do they give them away?
