The body is a temple, don't defile it.

1 Cor. 6: 19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

I don't have anything against tattoos. I think if a Christian gets a tattoo there is nothing wrong with that becuase it doesn't mean they're desecrating their body. The Bible spoke against some piercings and tattoos in Leviticus but it was to help the Jews abstain from pagan practices. At those times, pagans would draw on their bodies symbols of their Gods and would shave their head a certain way. Those laws are out dated and doesn't really apply to Christianity.

I think the tattoo thing is old testament, an Israelite or priest restriction or something like that.

We aren't Israelites and don't follow the Law of Moses. We are Christians under the Law of Christ contained in the New Testament.

Gal 3:23But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. 24Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.

Read Heb 8.
We are under the new covenant, not under the old.
Heb 8 says there would be no need to have a new if the old were perfect
Heb 8:7 the new makes the old obselete
Heb 8:13 the death of the testator puts the new in force.
Heb 9:16-22

As long as the tattoos don't depict or promote sin, there is no conflict.

In the Old Testament, it was forbidden. But back then it was associated with idolatry.

We are no longer under the Old Testament (see the book of Hebrews for explanation), and there is no prohibition in the New Testament. The body is a temple, but as Jesus pointed out, it is what comes out of the mouth (that overflows from the heart) that defiles a man, not what he puts into his body. And I think by extension, what he puts on his body.

Of course, if you are getting a tattoo that represents something that people would associate with evil, you have to examine your heart. You could _make_ it wrong by what you choose.

I personally don't have any tattoos. My brother-in-law has several (and he's a Christian). He got one after each of his daughter's were born. The represented their nicknames. It's kind of sweet, really.

The Old Testament laws are designed to teach us about God's desires. When you read the commandments against tattoos in the Old Testament, you can infer from the context that it is discussing the religious use of tattoos. (Of course, there are diverse opinions about this, and each should be convinced in their own mind.)

As to the freedom we have in Christ, our freedom should not be a vehicle to stumble another in Christ. "The right thing to do is to avoid eating meat, drinking wine, or doing anything else that makes your brother stumble or become upset or weak. As for the faith you do have, have it as your own conviction before God. How blessed is the person who has no reason to condemn himself because of what he approves!" (Romans 14:21-22)

The crux of the problem is the motivation behind it. Is the tattoo something that merely glorifies the flesh? If so, then it shouldn't be done. But, if someone does, others should not condemn that person. "Why, then, do you criticize your brother? Or why do you despise your brother? For all of us will stand before the judgment seat of God." (Romans 14:10)

All sin is cleansed by the blood. We all have our favorite sins, and not all live in victory in Christ, because some are still carnal. Allow everyone to grow in Christ, and let Christ deal with His follower.

(Of course, my opinion, and $1.50, will get you a cup of coffee at Denny's.)

Lev. 19: 28 says "..you must not put tattoo marking upon yourselves". Of course, this was a law given to the Israelites, but in principle, a christian would want to consider it.

You need to ask yourselves why you want a tattoo? Is it modest? Does it show a worldly rebellious attitude? Would it stumble my fellow christian brothers and sisters?

You must decide for yourself. There is a difference in the Old testament and the New. Jesus dying on the cross gave us grace and forgiveness, we no longer have to sacrifice animals and what not, because Jesus has died to cover our sins. There are many things I take seriously from the Bible. But you must also know what is old testament and New. I have not read enough to say for sure. But I am a Christan and I do have tatoos.

I think tattoos are cultural and during the period of Hebrew theocracy, neighboring pagan tribes used tattoos for religious means. It was important for the Hebrews to remain distinct and not assimilate these practices. Now, tattoos are simply a means of personal expression or even mere decoration. I don't think it is necessarily wrong. Leave it up to the individual.

We know that in the Law, making a mark on your body was sin.
Some ministers these days try to explain it away by saying it was to prevent the Jews from doing the same as the heathen religions around them. Thus, they open the door for people to receive tattoos.
But can we be so sure they are correct that there isn't some other reason? I think not.
While Christ forgives sin in the life of the believer, we ought not to use His grace as a liscence to sin. God has not changed...I suspect we can therefore say He would rather NOT have us marking our bodies up.
I myself thought to have one at one time and dealt with this same issue.
I remain tattoo free.

Your body is a temple. I am a little confused on this subject myself. I feel like we shouldn't change what God has done but at the same time what about religious tattoos? I have 7 body piercings, so I guess that means that I have decided that self expression is okay. (Don't freak out, 5 are in my ears.)
