As Richard stated, the price of accommodating a very obese person is a total disregard for the comfort of his/her neighbors. I did spend several hours smashed in a window seat next to a huge woman and it was really unpleasant. However, I would hope that the airlines could make the fare for the second seat at a reduced rate since they are not flying a second set of baggage or providing double the snacks (hopefully)

If someone takes up two seats then yes of course. The same as if a small child takes up half a seat do they pay half price? No! The parents still have to pay for a full one as the child is occupying a space that someone else could use. I'm afraid it's all about money there is no sentiment in business. Sorry for the obese person, but the airline are only interested in profit.

As unfair as it may seem yes any person who requires 2 seats for whatever reason should have to pay for the second seat. There are certain medical conditions that the airlines will accomodate if informed in advance - such as a broken back meaning you have to lie flat, or broken leg needing the extra room but obesity is not a valid condition for this.
The same goes when they demand an upgrade to a business class seat as their backsides can't fit in the economy seat they chose to pay for. You want the extra space and service from business class they get your wallet out and pay up.

Yes. When a person pays for an airline ticket, they are not paying for the person, they are paying for the seat. If a person takes two seats (no matter the reason) then there will be two less seats available for others to purchase.

YES!!! OR...there should be some slightly larger seats on every plane for people of a certain size!!!
I have just come back from NYC and had to sit for 8 hours next to someone who was obese and they took approx 1/3 of my seat!!! It was VERY uncomfortable, especially as I was in the middle seat on a row. He was in the aisle seat but was already taking up half the aisle too....It was a REAL squash when the hostesses came along with the food trolley!!!! There was nothing I could say to him though. I felt embarrassed for him and there was nothing that could be done at the time. It was NOT fair on me tho...especially as I had paid for ALL of my seat!!!!! And especially now we are all aware of DVT and the like. It's dangerous...Grrrrrrr.....rant over!!!!

I speak from the side of a person that has traveled sitting next to someone who takes up almost a seat and a half.
It was the worst ride of my life. I was SMUSHED the whole trip. Yes. If they need to seats they should have to pay for two seats and be given two seats.
This is for the comfort and safety of all!

I have to say that, yes, if you require two seats because of your girth, then you should have to pay for two fares UNLESS you have irrefutable proof from a physician that your obesity is beyond your control (a notarized letter, perhaps?). Lots of people claim that their weight is not under their control, but few physicians would agree with them. However, believe it or not, there are people out there who have medical problems that mean their weight is truly a disability and uncontrollable disease, rather than the inevitable result of their own poor choices. However, they are in the distinct minority. After all, airlines don't charge extra for people in wheelchairs, even though they often require extra assistance and storage for their medical equipment.
Basically, if you have made avoidable choices that inconvenience other passengers and airline staff, you should have to pay for any extra costs your choices may incur.

Yes. Airlines should have to suffer from an obese person making the customer next to them uncomfortable when they can just sell two non-obese people and get double the profit. Also for safety reasons aswell.

Y'know, I've never actually heard of anyone being charged for two seats on an airplane because of their size...
(Except on here, of course...)
I don't think it happens. But I bet the wider person wouldn't mind paying it either if the airline would take out the stupid armrest in the middle and they could actually get two seats!
I've often said I would happily pay twice as much to fly in first class and get twice the room... but it's ten to twelve times as much to fly first class!
Airlines...

Yes. Most airlines have that policy. They sell tickets by the seat, not the person. I know people who buy three seats so no one sits next to them and they have the whole row to stretch out in.
