I remember watching Crocodile Dundee (I think) and a character said something like, 'Who owns that rock over there?'.

I got to thinking, that's true, isn't it? If I said I owned 100 acres of land, then as far as society is concerned, I would be the land owner, to do with it as I pleased (within reason) and, if chose, to not let anyone else in.

But the land isn't really ours, is it? Are we just caretakers for our children?

You're right, and we are poor stewards of it. Perhaps after mankind does itself in, the earth can heal itself.

I own a 1/4 acre block of land with my cottage on top... I only own it in one perspective of looking at it.. I can't really do anything to it without council permission and that costs you money.. I want to build a shed down the back... $250.00 just for some clown to look at my plans... No we are just custodians of the land and one day ownership of land will be not as we know it in our life times... Love and Light.. BB )O(

From a technical point of view, in the UK the only person who actually owns the land is the Monarch. That's why the government can enforce compulsory purchase orders, because they are acting in the name of the Monarch.

land is not 'ownable' per se...but in this country we have personal property rights, unless the government deems it necessary to take your land for some greater good...ultimately, land is owned by those who can keep it and hold it against all takers...

No the land is not ours to own. Look at it as if you are renting and the next occupant will be your kids.

that's why aboriginal people get into a lot of trouble. apparently they don't believe that anyone can own land or animals. seems fairly logical to me.
