'p' stands for progressive

To put it Simply:
I stands for Interlaced: the TV will display the odd lines of the picture and the even lines very quickly to produce the Image.
p stands for progressive and the TV will display the full image in one pass.
For watching sports and fast-paced action the image quality looks better in a 1080p resolution.
But there isn't much 1080p content available. No television networks broadcast in 1080p, only certain HD-DVD and Blu-ray movies can display 1080p.

When a TV/monitor etc.. creates a picture it turns on a line of pixels from one side to the other of the screen. There are a 1080 lines from top to bottom of the screen.
With interlaced it does every other line on pass one, then the rest on pass two. Or, all the odd lines (1,3,5,7..) on the first pass and even lines on the second pass.
With progressive, it does them in sequence.
It goes top to bottom something like 60 times a second.
I don't follow HD technology closely, I didn't know there was 1080p technology yet?

1080p is a higher quality picture. The P stands for progressive scan, where the I stands for interlaced.
P is considered to be "true" hi def. Both are very nice though. However, technically 1080p, does produce a higher quality picture.
