My budget has pretty much limited me to these to dSLRs. I have never had an SLR camera before, but have had 3 digital cameras. I have no lenses, so the problem with the lenses in the D40 should not be a problem. Another alternative is to just spend $200 on a film SLR to just get the feel for them. Please help! Thanks.

Two more questions:
1. Is the D40x any good?

2. What is the best editing software to buy for under $200?

The best camera for you is the one you love to hold in your hands and want to take thousands of pictures with.

Seriously; you've narrowed down your choices to two excellent cameras. It's time to forget about statistics and numbers now. Go to your local camera store and try them both. The one you love using the most is the one for you.

Actually, with a D40 or D40x lenses can be a problem. Nikon has a great selection of lenses, but the D40 / D40x can't use everything.
Here's a case in point - this guy wants to use his D40x for a wedding shoot. The D40 clearly wasn't designed for this:

If you replace the D40 with a D50 in your comparison, you can side step this limitation.
Between the Nikon D40 / D50 and the Canon Rebel XT, the XT is a bit more advanced. (The discontinued Nikon D70s was more evenly matched.) Still, the difference between the D50 and the XT is pretty small so I agree with lenslender: get the camera that feels best.
As for digital vs. film, spend a bit more and get a digital model. You'll spend a bit more more up front, but you'll save several times this amount over the lifetime of the camera in film & development costs.

The D40 is cheaper but is only 6mp

The XT is about $100 more and 8 mp

Both are good, solid cameras with good lenses.

Nikon SMOOTHS the image out making colors more uniform but text less sharp.

Canon SHARPENS the image out making colors splottchy but text sharper.

The Nikon is bigger in size.

If you know people with Canon EF Lenses or Nikon AF lenses then that can be a deciding factor if they let you borrown the leneses.
