Strictly from a dietary standpoint, as a physician I can speak to this aspect. The cats have a different nutritional needs in most all nutrients, proteins, fats, and carbohydrates than us. However, in the context of once a day, the effects of that difference may be mitigated. Unfortunately if you are even considering this, you have not truly, at least your friend, hasn't truly considered all the snacks that us humans have that are just for us. I'm not speaking of "slim fast" or items such as that. Think about trying Beef Jerky in the afternoons as a snack. The high protein content will boost your body's calorie burning potential, increase fat loss, and increase lean muscle. However whether cat food or beef jerky(i hope beef jerky), unless the rest of your day is balanced, there will be no benefits to reap.

I used to eat Milk-Bone dog biscuits when I was a kid. Pet foods can be nutritious with lots of vitamins. People who are financially strapped have been known to buy canned pet foods because they are cheaper (or used to be) than canned tuna. Granted pet foods are an acquired taste, but if your friend likes it then there should be no side effects.

i would think that cat food and dog food is perfectly safe for humans to eat, considering the fact that all of that stuff is made from mostly all the things that we eat as well.

Go for it. Just watch out for hairballs or any urges to sharpen your nails on things.
