She pulls them out and now I have to think of a choking hazard because I have found one earring and the back chewed up and spit out in her bed. She pulls the safety back off. I do not want her to rip her ears or choke she was 14 months old when I had her ears pierced she is now 29 months she just started doing this in the past month.

I had my daughter's ears pierced when she was about a year old. We were lucky and never had a problem with her messing with the earrings.

Your daughter has found something new to play with and she is too young to appreciate the risk of choking or swallowing an earring. Take the earrings out for a while. The hole will not grow over right away, so you can always put the earrings back in a few weeks if you think she won't try taking them out. Worst case, the holes will grow in and she can decide for herself when she is older if she wants to get them redone.

Her health and safety are more inportant right now than keeping the holes open. Good luck.

My daughter has had her ears pierced since she was 5 months old and she has never taken her earrings out. {She will be 2 the 27th of this month} And here recently she's been seeing me with mine and and noticing that she's got earrings too. So she has been asking to put my hoops in. So I take out her little diamond studs and put my hoops in. And she walks around showing everyone her new earrings. So go to the store and let her pick out a pair {no matter how ugly or big they are} and then let her wear them during the day as her dress up earrings and then at night she has to put back in her bedtime earrings. It might help.

My 18 month old has tubes in both ears and we were told to use ear plugs any time there was a chance for him to get water in his ears (bathing, swimming, etc.). So my question would be whether or not your son had ear plugs in when he went swimming, because he could've gotten water in his ears which might be painful or could've cause an infection if not able to drain properly. It also could be that his molars are coming in, which can often irritate a baby's throat and/or ears. The only way to know for sure is to take him to his doctor or ear specialist. I wouldn't wait too long to take him though. If it is an infection, they can get out of hand fast.

I would try small hoops or the twist on backs. I had my daughters ears pierced when she was 6 weeks old, so hers have always just been part of her and she has never messed with them. I would also ignore all of the people judging you for your choices with YOUR daughter. My ex-mother in law was the same way and I figured that if my daughter decided she didn't want earrings when she was older, she could take them out. Now she's almost 10 and still loves them!!!

2 year olds are too young to have their ears pierced for such reasons. I had mine done when I was 5 but because I was scared of losing the earrings I kept pushing the backs onto my ears and they embedded into my lobe - it was not pleasant and with hind sight my mum now thinks that 5 was maybe too young to have such jewellery. I would take them out and let them heal up and maybe she could have them done again when she is older. She will probably enjoy the responsibility to look after her earrings when she is 10 or so and will even be able to enjoy choosing different designs and getting them as gifts for birthdays, Christmas etc.

I am not against ear piercing at all but I think the decision is up to the child and the parent jointly. I would rather get my childs ears pierced when they can understand the importance and pros and cons of having such jewellery.

Good luck!

I had the same problem with my daugther, it is only a phase. What I did was take the earrings out and leave them out, but I would occassionally stick the earring throught the hole so they didnt grow up. She almost 4, and now she loves having earrings and being able to choose which ones she will wear.

Yes, take the earring out. When she is older and wants to get them pierced let her, but her safety is more important than pierced ears.

Can you try the hoops? My daughter's wouldn't stay in, but I only caught her eating an earring once. Have you tried the rubber backs? They seem to be working pretty well for us, and if she were to swallow them, I don't think it would be that much of a hazard. Buy some hoops that a child couldn't get a finger through to pull them out, and that might help.

2 year olds are inherently curious so it's pretty natural for your girl to wonder about the pretties in her earlobes. While earrings are cute, my recommendation is to remove them, let her ears grow and avoid a definite and plausible choking hazard altogether. Seems safer all the way around. :)
