This bizarre answer was just given to an equally bizarre request for names of people to pray for:
_________
Very kind of you.
However, people do need to learn to pray for themselves, and The Lord's Prayer can be used as a model.
Atheists need to pray too! I know they think it's not required but a devout atheist is anathema and a conundrum.
You might like to pray for atheists, for they really do need the Lord's assistance!
_________
So I'd like to know just who or what atheists are supposed to pray to...
Is "a devout atheist is [an] anathema and a conundrum" saying "once you start praying you won't/can't remain an atheist?" Is there any way that isn't hypocritical, insulting and putting the cart a tad before the horse?

Well, being a devout anathema and professional conundrum, I believe it's still within my purview to pray fervently that such fools might be swiftly and completely assumed into the Primal Chaos which has spewed them out half-intelligent and half-formed upon this hostile planet, that they might return to the one Ground and Foundation of their existence and so free the rest of us from their annoying mewling. Verily these kittens neither feed nor thrive, nor is there hope for them apart from a sudden and unlikely miracle of Chance.
May the Great Unfathomless Nothingness draw them to its bosom forever. Amen.

As a devout atheist, I personally pray to Sponge Bob. I've found that he answers prayers just as well as anyone else. Plus, I like the color yellow.

Why pray? No one is listening. There is only one true God and yes, He will listen. He loves you, I mean, He created you, with a plan & purpose in mind. He already knows your heart & what's in it. The purpose of prayer is inter-relational, us to God & God to us. If you don't believe, then there is no one for you to pray to. And if you're so intent on 'not believing,' why do you need to pray anyway? You're an island, right? Just the fact that you feel the need to pray reminds you of that God shaped need within you to know Him. You're running from yourself, no one else.

No one HAS to do anything in terms of religion or religious activities.
As for the arrogance of praying for those who believe differently than one does, oneself, well....I'll leave that to the arrogant ones.
I never do energy work (our version of prayer) for anyone who doesn't request it or at the least, give permission.

What exactly is a "devout atheist"? isn't that an oxymoron?

In other words, it's more important that they are surrounded by others who act like them than that they personally grow in their own faith. Nice.

Not true, Atheists do not have to pray-- - and don't.
May "god" bless your ah-soul anyway.
