There are new breeds of SSRI's now including excitalopram, also alternative stuff, EFT supposed to be good but never had it...also something called SAMe it's a natural compound, check out Dr Ray Sahelian's website for info but try only low doses...Exercise 4-5 times a week for 30 mins like walking is supposed to be as good as antidepressants.....good luck.

The more you learn about yourself the easier you will be able to manage your depression keep a daily log of all emotion, try to see if there is a patteren if there is you can head it off before it's got you so down all you can do is wait for it to pass, get up be active in you controlling it, let it nor longer control you. Eat happy foods, do things you've never done before. Treat yourself good one day a week- just pamper yourself. Open the door to your inner child, draw, write, color, watch commidies, cartoons, go for a run or walk, get a pet and do not watch dramas or listen to said counrty songs. Change what you are doing! It is all in your hands bipolar or not, chemical imbalance or not death in your life what ever it is that causes your depression give it the energy no more and turn things around you are bigger then it. A whole person with all its eliments can fight against depression which is an emotion if they work at it and really want it to happen. I am bipolar - med free, I am living it but it has taken every day of my life to be detremined to controll it! and everyday is a different day with a different task and challenge. Good luck!

Awww, even your avatar looks depressed! :-(
I can't think of things that are new treatments or that has been learned about depression since 2000, with one exception (and it's not really positive).
In the past few years, studies have suggested that anti-depressants in children and teenagers can actually cause worse depression, and lead to suicidal thoughts.

The current theory is to use antidepressants in combination with cognitive behavioral therapy. The idea is that you start out with both, use the medication short term and in combination with regular counseling sessions. Once your mood is stabilized, hopefully you can go off the medication and follow up with occasional fine tuning cbt sessions.
