Usually it either too big or an ego or low self-esteem.
For those with too big of an ego, they just truly can't fathom why anyone would not want to go out with such a wonderful catch that they consider themselves to be and if they can get the reasons for it, they are sure that they can persuade you with their charms how wrong you are are
For the ones with low self-esteem, they truly want to know what they can do to say, do, or make themselves look or dress like, drive or buy for you and would do anything in order for you to find them attractive instead of accepting themselves for who they are and to try to seek out someone who digs them for it.
For either, you have already said the appropriate thing in letting them know that you do not like them in that way.
To get them to leave it alone about it, go one step further and tell them it is nothing personal, it is just that everyone has different likes and dislikes and there when there is chemistry there, it is there, but if is not, you wouldn't want to lead them or compromise yourself by faking it. Point out any positive traits they have and wish them luck in finding the right girl as you are sure she out there for them. This way, it gives them some dignity back in the face of rejection and they will respect you for it.

Well, when that happens to me, I say that I'm really flattered that they ask, but I already have a boyfriend, (which I actually don't), that means they don't ask why. If one ever did ask why, my response would depend on my mood at the time, I might give them the boyfriend line, I might say "I'm sorry, I wasn't aware I had to give a reason". I might say I'm not attracted to them. But seriously, it takes a lot of nerve to ask a woman out, so unless they are rude or really horrible I will probably say yes, you never know after talking to them for a little while you might lern something great about them and really enjoy their company.

Well, I would get it if I wanted to just have a one night stand with the girl. Usually me, or my friend ask a girl out only to get laid and have no problem getting rejected cause there are 100 other girls in the club. But if I actually like someone then yeah I would have a problem with a rejection, If the guy truly loves you he might ask, why not? Or maybe he was just positive you like him.

It sounds like he is really into you and is bieng persistant... best thing to do is avoid him and if he asks why.. just say "hey I don't feel comfortable around you anymore" sometimes the best way to get rid of unwanted attention is to be a little rude -- I know its not what you want to do but its just the way it has to be sometimes
