I like to sit when i ride the train. Would i gain muscle or burn more calories if i just stand. or if i had a teaching or department store job where i am forced to stand instead of a desk job? what is the benefit in standing?

I think there is a benefit in standing as opposed to sitting. You're allowing your body's blood to flow more normally. Also, I would much rather have a job that allows me to stand and move around as opposed to being confined to a desk 8 hours a day. With this freedom to move, you will end up burning more calories than just sitting still.

If you want to gain muscle from standing, while you're on the train, try doing some toe flexors. Raise yourself up and down on your toes. This will strength-train your calf muscles.

You burn roughly 10 more calories an hour while standing versus sitting. You really dont gain anything else, but standing does burn more calories.

If you are just standing and not moving at all there is nothing beneficial to that but most people move while standing which burns calories.

standing burns a few more calories than sitting, but not enough to call it beneficial. the more you move, the more you burn.
