This scenario is a direct reference to Jeremiah 17:13 "O LORD, the hope of Israel, All who forsake You shall be ashamed. Those who depart from Me Shall be written in the earth, Because they have forsaken the LORD, The fountain of living waters.”

By this we know that Jesus was writing the names and sins of those who wished to stone the woman. Although the Mosaic Law contained a penalty of stoning for those caught in the act of adultery, other laws preclude sinners from carrying it out (for example, the prohibition against giving a "false witness"). Therefore, those who wished to kill the woman had departed from God's law and had forsaken Him.

i think of it two ways, first it was a list of all the sins for the people that were there ready to cast the stones. On the other hand, I think He was just doodling, as a way to ease His anger at the mob ready to stone her. Either way, it was set up by the Sanhedrin to try and trap Jesus.

It does not say interior the Gospels what Jesus wrote interior the sand whilst he stored the girl from being stoned to demise. Your wager is as reliable as mine. I as quickly as heard Billy Graham on television (no longer that i actually watched him on television) say that he believed Jesus replaced into writing down the ten commandments... quite the single approximately "however shall no longer kill".

I believe He started writing sins down and one by one as they looked on,the guys recognized theirs and slunk away.Thinking,"How did He know about that girl in Alexandria? That was 10 years ago!I never told anyone,but he wrote her name in the sand!" Etc etc.

It's a facinating study, actually. The manuscripts for the new testement include the footnotes;
Jesus was writing one by one the sins of those others who stood there accusing her.
Therefore, one by one they kinda did one of those "exit, stage left" deals to get out of there because they knew that they were gonna be judged next.

He wrote the sins of the people who accused her, each one saw it as if Jesus wrote his sin only on the ground.
Amazing he knows th eheart of every man. We are therfore not called to be Judges of others lest we be judged too.
We need to hold our mouths and tongues when we cast judgment. It is not our duty but only God's.

According to tradition, he was idly writing the sins of the people who were about to stone the woman.

The Bible never says for certain though.
