on my 1990 cherokee 4.0l the tranny seems to shift out of overdrive at low speeds like between 25 and 45 mph. i asume this is happing cause my tach. will jump in rpm from like maby 1200 to like 1600, it hapens when theres not realy a load on the drive chain, what i mean by this is like when i accelerate a little or go up a slight incline then the rpms go back down as if its returning into od. at 55 and above this does not happen. has anyone else ever had this hapen? thanks in advance.

Try Changing Fluid and Filter Before you get too excited and spend too much $$$. When you replace the fluid add a "Lucas Transmission treatment" Into as well.

This can be caused by the lockup torque converter unlocking which it does between 45-50MPH. Once the vehicle increases in speed to about 50MPH the lockup torque converter is completely locked giving better fuel economy, but at the same time once you reach cruising speed, and then attempt to speed up it would feel kind of sluggish while the torque converter unlocks. Sometimes it feels as though the vehicle is actually downshifting, which is actually the lockup torque converter disengaging.

Do you have a lock up convertor? Sounds like it's doing what it is supposed to do!
