Thorazine is in aclass called major tranquilizers, that includes Haldol and a variety of more recently developed drugs. It is most often used as an anti-psychotic medication, frequently for people diagnozed for schizophrenia, but may beprescribed for other purposes in dramatically reduced amounts. This is a drug that was instrumental in reducing the population of mental hospitals by making it possible for psychotic patients to live in the community, but I'm not sure how much it's used anymore with a plethora of other drugs now available. Thorazine does have significant side effects at typical full dosages.

It's the first psychiatric drug that was discovered, in 1952. It is effective in treating schizophrenia and other forms of psychosis (hallucinations and delusions). Since it was the first drug, it was often given to people who didn't really have psychotic symptoms because it was the only thing that was available. More is known about mental illness now and a lot more drugs have become available for different types of symptoms. Thorazine has largely been replaced by more modern medications, but some doctors may be prescribing it to patients if other medications aren't working.

Thorazine is used for the treatment of schizophrenia (severe disruptions in thought and perception). It is also prescribed for the short-term treatment of severe behavioral disorders in children, including explosive hyperactivity and combativeness; and for the hyperenergetic phase of manic-depressive illness (severely exaggerated moods).
Thorazine is also used to control nausea and vomiting, and to relieve restlessness and apprehension before surgery. It is used as an aid in the treatment of tetanus, and is prescribed for uncontrollable hiccups and acute intermittent porphyria (attacks of severe abdominal pain sometimes accompanied by psychiatric disturbances, cramps in the arms and legs, and muscle weakness).

It is a drug called an anti-psychotic, not anti-anxiety although, according to wikipedia it has been used in cases of severe anxiety among people who also are experiencing manic depression or schizophrenia. I'd be concerned if you have simple general anxiety and were prescribed this drug. Talk to your doctor.
