A long time. Catholics still constitute almost one billion in membership, Muslims are gaining ground every day, and the U.S. still gives religious groups special rights (tax breaks, the right to exclude atheists - like the Boy Scouts, national holidays for Christian beliefs). As Europe grows less religious, the U.S. will fight tooth and nail against the trend here. Ever taken a look at the billboards while driving to work? Jesus would no doubt be very proud at the signs that ask "Got Jesus?". Even our paper money has God on it (if I was a Christian I would be greatly offended by this). Until we can accept all beliefs as valid on a societal level, your best bet to find close to complete religious freedom (and freedom from religion if you so desire) is to become a European.

I guess that would dependon how you define "mainstream society". If it is western liberalism, then it is already considered archaic. You, obviously, consider it archaic. Fortunately there are another few billion people with different ideas and beliefs, so religion(s) will never be considered archaic.
Also, what do you mean by "religion"? Almost anything pursued with enough zeal could be considered a "religion". I often think "liberalism" is a religion. If you are not a fan of any particular religion, good for you. If you look at people who follow a particular belief system as archaic, you need to look a little closer at yourself.

Religion is a step up the ladder. Like any ladder, you can step on one of the rungs and keep going, you can stop and rest on one for a while, or you can skip one altogether. There is not much sense, though, to set up your household on some rung in the middle of the ladder when the goal is to get to the top.
Your expression mainstream society hardly applies here because there are too many rungs, too many people being born at different levels of this evolutionary (sorry) ladder.
Religion will survive as long as that rung is useful, forever.
Remember that when necessary, religion can camouflage itself, it can take on different appearances. This factor may even be the reason why there are so many in existence.
It is silly to bash any one rung just because your group either has not reached it yet or has surpassed it and no longer has any use for it. Let it be, or do you think it is your ladder?

Good question. I guess it will around for a long time to come. I will guess at least 20 years or so. Just a guess, of course.
