I am trying to record audio from a DVD or VHS. Is there a way to hook up a device to a computer via the Red and White audio cables, or some other cable, and record the sound output? What software can I use?

Click the start button in the corner, then click All Programs, next click Accesories, click Entertainment, then press Sound Recorder. You need a microphone to use it!!

Audio input into a computer is a real problem, because most computers are not really optimised for this.

The computer uses a analog to digital converter which often on modern computers is not very good. Because it is not used very often.

If you want to record good qualify audio, then you may need to buy a sound card which has good analog to digital converstion.

THe other problem is from a stereo device you don't want to plug it into the microphone plug, but the line in plug (if your computer has one of these).

The microphone plug has power on it to make the microphone work, but the line in doesn't, because the external device already has sound. You will get better quality with the line in plug.

Once again, modern computers may not have a line in plug, check at the back of your computer to see if there is one.

Finally use one of many packages to record sound, Goldwave is a good shareware program for record and optimizing sound (I have been using it since it was a free download, now it is shareware).

Oh, one more point. If it is a DVD then it is easier to RIP it into your computer. That is, put it in the DVD drive and use software to convert into a format in your computer.
