Why do athiests get so upset about God if they don't believe in Him? Wouldn't that be like getting mad over nothing???

I don't get mad about god in the least. Feel free to worship him if you choose.

My problem is when it goes from worship to the attempt to convert others. I respect your wish to worship, I only ask that you respect my wish not to in return.

Atheists aren't upset about God. They're upset about other people trying to force their beliefs on them. How would you feel if, everywhere you looked, there was someone in your face pushing Islam?

And why are all these believers answering this question as if they have any idea what atheists think or feel? For those of you with ignorant answers like "because the word of God strikes nerves" --(no, it doesn't. We don't believe there IS a God, so we don't care a whit about what he supposedly says.) or that we are "lost and angry" (I'm not lost, and I'm not angry--though people who know nothing about me presuming to know what I think or feel irritates me). "Their subconscious knows the truth" is one of the most irritating ones of all. How would you feel if I kept telling you over and over that subconsciously, you really know that there ISN'T a God, but you just refuse to admit it? That would irritate you, wouldn't it? We DON'T believe in the same things you do. We DON'T believe in God. We DON'T believe in a deity. Don't presume that other people "secretly" believe the same things you do. It's ignorant and arrogant. Get over yourselves.

i am an atheist, i do not get upset or offended about GOd, i get upset and offended by fanatics, zealots, intolerance and ignorance.

Of course we should be allowed to criticize and debate other people's religions and faiths, but only as long as it is an informed and educated criticism, opinion - which has been made with some knowledge and research about the subject.

I am not a religious person -

So many of the religious fanatics, zealots and bigots, who show their ignorance, intolerance, biased opinions and their racism on this site on a daily basis - seem to have forgotten what the true meaning of the religious texts and various religious books that they so often quote actually mean and what they truly represent - so according to their own behavior and actions and words, THEY are the one's that will face the wrath of God, the final days and go to HELL instead of those of us who are or try tobe more liberal, honest, open minded and fair.

I don't get upset about god. I get upset over the people that try and cram their beliefs down my throat, into our schools, and into our government......and it's the believers that answer questions like this as an atheist, and they have no idea what they're talking about. And, no offense, it's questions like yours that is a huge misconception, and generalization.
That's what upsets me. It's not the thought of god personally.

We get upset about the things that are done in the name of religion, starting wars, the spreading of ignorance and denial of knowledge & much more.

One of my greatest concerns is the christians who use religion as an excuse for capital punishment saying if someones really innocent, then they'll be with God so it's okay.

It's not okay.

Is the number one cause of war something to trifle with? I think not! Is the number one method of brain washing for these sick cults like in Waco Tx something to ignore? I think not! Getting upset over nothing is not the problem, it is the suicide bomber thinking that he is doing his "Nothing's" biddings by blowing me up. How about the televangelists like Bobby Tilton yapping his smarmy mouth taking money from innocent old people and gullible young people. It may not be as bad as insiting a holy war, but the fact that so many christians allow it to occur is pretty sad.

"...But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men."

I get upset when they try to convince me that I am stupid because I don't believe in their God. If there is something so powerful (which goes against every rule we know in the universe) why would it care what we, a comparatively insignificant species, do or don't do. Suppose you created ants to your liking. What do you care, as a person, what ants do? Why would you care if the ants believe in you (while on top you are hiding). If you wanted them to 'believe' in you or notice your presence you would have to either show up or make them smarter (since you are God almighty and they are dumb enough to not "notice your presence"). In any case, why would the ants be to blame since you were the one who made them stupid AND you are hiding from them... I always do the ant analogy and it presents a clear scenario of why it is irrelevant to "believe". Therefore, trying to convince me that I am stupid for being more logical annoys me.

I'm not an atheist, more agnostic but I don't get offended by other peoples beliefs. It just bothers me when people tell me they 'know' what my problem is and that I am somehow 'less than' because I don't have God in my life. It annoys me in the same way as it does when people tell me I shouldn't take my medication because I don't 'need' it and that they 'know' I have some other problem. I just like to be left alone and have it understood that I know myself better than some stranger does.

For the most part I don't have a problem with anyone who believes in God. However I do have a problem with people who feel that they need to force people to think the way they do.

I don't. I occasionally get frustrated by some people's breath-taking stupidity (a minority of believers) and I hate to see believers spouting hatred (e.g. of homosexuals) but other than that it's entertaining and worthwhile to come here and discuss religion with people of differing views.
