The Catholic church came into existence about the year 400.
Rome was having a civil war, and on one side was this legionnaire called Constantine. Well he had a vision and said since he had the vision if he won the war he would make the Roman empire become christian.
So he wins, and marches into Rome as the new emperor. He decrees that Christianity is now legal and the official state religion.

The Catholic church was at it's peak in power in the Middle Ages, so it came about some time before that. Right after Jesus, there were many churches, but they weren't all "Catholic" or "Baptist", they were pretty much still Jewish, just including teachings of Christ as well. The "Catholic" church didn't start with Peter, since he was not "Catholic". I don't know exactly when the church started. I learn my facts from my husband and my mom, both Catholics, and the idiot's guide to catholicism.

There are plenty of unbiased books that will give you the history of the catholic church, it is well documented. There are always watch "men" on the scene in any age. To answer your question I'd have to write a book, I'm not up to it.

It was in the 11th century when the great Schism happened.
Before it was just christianity, with two small changes (when the oriental orthodox and assyrian church splitted in 4th century).
But in the 11th century the christianity split in two: the Orthodox and the Roman Catholic church. Afterwards there were many other changes, but the Catholicism dates from that time.
You can look on the net (wikipedia) for Schism(religion).

From what I gather, it didn't get serious until Martin Luther gave us his 95 thesis.
I honestly don't know the year or the time period....I'm assuming around 1900 years ago is when catholicism started
