From an atheist.
For me creating a beautiful life involves living by 3 principles: charity, honesty and courage.
I guess that charity would be = to good works? Helping others ( for example, recently I paid for a blind Amazon native girl to come to the US and have corneal transplant surgery which restored sight in one eye) gives one a great sense of fulfillment.

While it's true that you can only be saved by grace, good works are a result of the decision to accept Christ. Some people think if you do enough good works, that somehow you'll earn God's love or favor.

But the truth is, good works are the result of Christ working on the inside of you and now all that great stuff is simply showing up on the outside.

When you make the decision to do good works, it's out of gratitude and love for all God's done for you.

Just remember that God looks at the motive in every thing you do. So all your good works need to start with the right attitude on the inside.

The Four Noble Truths
Whilst seated beneath the Bodhi tree the Buddha experienced the four noble truths:

Dukkha: All existence is unsatisfactory and filled with suffering.
Trsna: The root of suffering can be defined as a craving or clinging to the wrong things; searching to find stability in a shifting world is the wrong way.
Nirvana: It is possible to find an end to suffering.
The Noble Eightfold Path is the way to finding the solution to suffering and bring it to an end.

Even before I believed in God I did good works. I think it is just part of being a decent person. Anyone with a kind heart will just do good things for the sake of humanity.

I have always been a good person, and always been good to others. Not saying I dont have my moments of frustration toward people. I believe when one is saved then it is not hard to do good works, but good works dont get you to heaven. Only by the blood of Jesus can we enter.

There is an altruistic motivation as well as an egoistical one:

Altruistic : good things I do for somebody can help him/her. Generosity can be the motivating factor, pure , unconditional, uninterested generosity.

Egoistic: I want to brag, show off with my good deeds. I want the others to admire me. I feel better after helping someone.

Simple: Doing good deeds feels good. I was helped a lot when I was a kid when my dad got sick. I choose to give back so that I can help another child who may be in the same boat that I was.

Doing 'good works' won't get anyone to heaven.
Its by grace through faith, the Bible says, not of works lest any man should boast. However, the fruit that we are saved, is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, patience, perseverance etc.

Because we have the capacity to improve our lot in life. We are the most advanced species on the planet and are capable of so much, it is a complete waste of ourselves to spend it warring.
