For liquids you can have 1 quart size bags with liquids in 3oz or smaller containers. No sharp objects (scissors, knives, etc). You can take on your camera, cell phone, DVD, mp3, and food to eat on the airplane. After security you can buy a bottle of water or soda and carry it on. For a full list of what is allowed and prohibited see the TSA's website.

This seems to change almost on a daily basis. Good rule of thumb to go by is take reading material, medication, and anything that is absolutely essential for your survival. Things that can be replaced at your destination (ie: toiletries, grooming appliances) should be packed in your regular checked baggage. Do not take anything metal (nail clippers and such) or liquids(cologne, soft drinks, ect.) I have also heard of people having problems taking lighters(if you are a smoker). So, if you are not going to need it during your flight, or be in dire straights if it gets lost(medication) don't take in in your carry on bag.

I ALWAYS ask the airline, just before going, and customs, if involved. Of course,, no weapons, contraban, flamables, sharp anything. Often, on international flights, some fresh fruits are a no,no, due to diesase control. I aways wash all my clothes, and even my shoes, to be carful not to unknowingly carry an insect, or disease, from one country to another. Some people are dying from a spider, that likes to hide under toilet seats, for example.

In short, you can't take anything that is hazardous. Liquids are confined to the 3-1-1 rule.
