I don't think going to all that trouble will increase the value of your home much. Personally, I'd leave well enough alone and just keep them clean and clutter-free.

I understand your dilemna, however, the most important features of the house is usually the kitchen. I would replace or relaminate.
Lowe's has a great looking, cost effective, countertop that looks like marble, granite. I had a cabinet in my office that had a broken top and held the fax machine and a printer, asked our shop guy to go and find a nice countertop to fit the cabinet. It was a blue, and had flecks in it -- beautiful and low cost -- is still there and I'm not!

If you only have the budget for laminate, do that. how long are you counter tops? if it's an average L shape, and you have someone that can help, do it yourself. My husband and I did ours, cost us about 400.00, but well worth the sweat. We got a faux granite looking laminate. Go to Lowes or Home depot, they can help you out!

Your kitchen is so important to your re-sale price, you really shouldn't do a quick fix on your counters. Check out all your options within your price range and replace them. There are many low cost alternatives that will show well. Check with Home Depot or Lowes.

Yes you can try that, if the paint is not that expensive. but you can also tile them. If you or your husband is handy, buy inexpensive tile at the Home Depot and retile the counter tops. It takes patience, but it will look beautiful. The Home Depot has help classes for people who want to learn.

if you're a dyi monkey, try tile, slate... usually .99/sq ft at home depot, easy to cut w/ elect. tile saw & figure 4 sqft for every running foot, a couplof bags of multi purpose thin set to stick to wood ( pull your formica first), a couple of boxes extra for edge band, & 3 to 6 tubes of liquid nail to set those, 1-2 bags of grout .... should be well under 1000.00 unless you have 300' of k-top!
