How about forming a non-religion/non-cult, where everyone determines which bits they like about each religion/cult, then incorporates them into their lives? Wouldn't we be happier then? Shouldn't our ultimate goal be to be happy?

Steve b: Of course I know about other groups, they're just not like the way I'm thinking of it. Look at Gazoo's answer and you see what they turn out like.

Gazoo, I wasn't just talking about Atheists, I was talking about every religion.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. I'm not Christian, Agnostic, Islam, Neo-Pagan, or anything else you can think of. I'm just a hopeful eclectic. Look that up if you want to.

decoons, that's great hun but you're missing my point. In life, whichever way you look at it, it's always about YOU. There's no such thing as being unselfish, which most gods demand. You love God because He loves you, because you feel like you're getting something out of your commitment.
And no matter what anyone says, God appears differently to everyone. Who are we to know what He's like, if He even exists?
Forget about focussing on Him and on trying to convert others to your thinking, just focus on being happy.

amsops: I was a Christian once. And no, not in the youth-group church-going way. I mean I actually believed that I had a personal relationship with God. And guess what "buddy", I was miserable. How can you be happy when you're taught to think that you're a terrible sinner? I live according to my own rules now, and I take responsiblity for my own actions. Yes it's difficult, but I AM happier., and I feel more fulfilled.

Your question is very good but I fear you might get some sarcastic remarks, people are very protective of their religion. Somethin similar to what you are saying would be the New World Order where everyone is governed by the same laws. If instituted well, this could be a Utopian society but there are people who will always try to take advantage of the situation. Some have offered science (what some consider to be the language of God) to be the means by which we live. Scientists are thought to generally be compassionate people who seek truth and provide answers to the world's ills. The bottom line is until we learn to come together under whatever religion we will continue to self destruct. As humans we have become remarkably self-serving, abandoning the idea of community and caring for others. And quite a few philosophers have suggested that we should live to be happy and that we should do whatever brings the most happiness to all those concerned, which is a great idea, but we find that human preference is so varied this is essentially impossible. Live life the way you see fit and do the things that make you happy, b/c we our all given a finite amount of time on this earth and no one has the right to tell you how to live your life.

Wouldn't that be about like letting everyone decide what parts of math they like and create their own multiplcation tables. Allow them to change long division to work however they want to incorporate it into their lives. And then lets see them put a rocket on the moon using that kind of math.

If there is a God, then certain things about him are also real. He can not be both an intelligent being and mere concept. He can not be both intimately involved and caring for people's lives and someone who just wound up the universe and walked away. He can not be someone who manifest himself in human form and someone who does not exist at the same time.

Just like in math, 2 apples +2 apples equals 4 apples all the time for everyone regardless of their own opinions. So in religion, the facts about God are the facts about God regardless of people's opinions.

The modern world had been in that cult, buddy. And the fact: its people do not show happier life, even worse in the life to come.
Better look for the 'cult' that promise you the happy eternal life. You know what I meant.

You have never tired to organize a group like this, I can tell. I have been active in Atheist political groups. Herding cats comes to mind. Everyone has their own agenda and it is hard to get anything done. That is what happens with free thinkers.

interior the Islamic faith, there is not any such factor because of the fact the in basic terms proper Messiah. We do have self assurance that Jesus became a messiah and a prophet because of the reality that he became despatched to the Jews to save them from their very own movements. We do have self assurance that God is the actual saviour and no guy could have the skill to save all of us. So the belief of a messiah in islam is diverse than that for the duration of the two Judaism and Christianity.

I am comfortable being non-religious on my own. I don't need to belong to a gang-like cult that forces views on others. I would rather search for the truth on my own rather than have someone else clutter my mind's thoughts.

Wouldn't it be better to take responsibility for your own life, instead of relying on organized superstition, which is what religion is?
