Your price range should get you a Ford Mondeo 2 litre engine automatic diesel or petrol. The car will probably be approx 5 years old but in good working order. Ford parts and spares are cheap and readily available.

Have been driving Ford cars since the 1960s - never had a problem. No, not even one.

I would recommend a Peugeot 206. It's an attractive car to look at (if you need a pretty car!), easy to drive and if you go for a diesel then it is also very economical. I have never had any technical problems with the one I have had for 7 years, so I would say they are a reliable vehicle to go for.

Brand new or used?
The first priority should be gas consumption. If you are doing a lot of commuting, then choose the Japanese imports, the newer the better. Toyotas and Hondas come to mind.
Second is the winters where you are. Bad winters? , choose all wheel or 4 wheel. Subarus.

The most fuel efficient car you can buy. Costs pennies to run and people will let you out of side roads.

That's a bit tough given the monetary restrictions! I would go with a Toyota which are known for their reliability and longevity!

Suzuki Alto, its small, reliable, and good with petrol.

Downside is that it only has 4 seats, but one can be installed if your willing to pay.
