The studio and the transmitter are usually in two different places. The studio signal usually goes to the transmit location via high bandwidth land line wires or through a microwave link. In rare instances like remote broadcasts, a satellite link may be used but that's pretty expensive so in general not used on a permanent basis.

The sounds in the radio station are converted to corresponding changing electrical signal. (say voltage.) This changing signal is sent through a medium (Wire or coaxial etc) to a transmitter. At the transmiter the signal (which actually represents the sounds in the radio station) is superimposed on a much higher frequency signal and sent to an antenna so that the electrical energy gets released into the air. We receive this high frequency signal. Out personal radio extracts the sound from the signal, which we here.
